We sell American-specification kitchen and home appliances into the UK — and the whole business rests on one sentence most of this trade will not say out loud: these machines are not built for a UK socket, and we tell you so before you buy, not after.
The gap we exist to fill
There are two ways most people end up buying an American appliance in this country, and nothing sensible in between them.
On one side is the marketplace listing with eleven photographs and no numbers. The cutout depth is not there. The voltage is not there. The shipping weight is not there. It arrives, it is magnificent, and it does not fit the hole or the supply — which nobody wrote down, so nobody is at fault.
On the other side is the trade importer who has all of those numbers and will not give them to you until you have spoken to someone on the telephone about a quotation. The information exists. It is just kept on the other side of a conversation you did not want to have.
Prime Tech Essentials is the counter in between. Fifty-two appliances, every specification the manufacturer published, in the manufacturer's own units, and a plain statement up front that these are American-specification goods and what that means for the supply they need.
What American specification actually means, and why we say it first
These are appliances built for the North American market. They run on 120V or 208–240V rather than UK 230V mains, so you need a suitable supply or a transformer rated for the load. Dimensions are given in inches and capacities in cubic feet, because that is how the manufacturer publishes them. Efficiency is rated under Energy Star, not the EU A–G label, and the two do not translate into one another.
None of that makes a machine worse. It does mean the appliance has to meet a kitchen and an electrical supply that were designed to a different set of assumptions, and that is a check somebody has to do before the order leaves.
We would rather it were us, on the page, in writing.
Check three things before you order. The supply — 120V or 208–240V, and whether you have it or need a transformer. The cutout — most of these are built-in, and the width, height and depth are in inches on the product page. The weight — from roughly 77 lb for a compact refrigerator to 395 lb for a large French-door model. Check that the weight can be moved to where it needs to go. If you are unsure on any of them, email us the measurements before you buy rather than after.
We do not offer a warranty or guarantee of our own on any of this, and we are not going to invent one to make the page feel warmer. What you have instead are your statutory rights, which are stronger than most shop guarantees and which we do not get to write: the Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers goods that are faulty or not as described, and the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you 14 days to cancel. We add a 30-day returns window on top of that statutory period. That is the whole of it, and it is all true.
Four things we will not do
It is easy to write a values page. It is more useful to write down the specific things we have decided not to do, because those are the ones you can check.
- We will not let a listing imply it plugs into a UK socket. These are American-specification appliances and we say so before you buy rather than after. Where the manufacturer publishes the electrical requirement we print it — 120V or 208–240V, in plain words. Where they do not publish it, we say that too rather than guessing on your behalf: ask us and we will get the figure before you order. Some of the range is not electrical at all — the propane grills and the griddle run from a gas bottle.
- We will not quietly convert the manufacturer's numbers. Inches stay inches and cubic feet stay cubic feet, as published, because a rounded conversion is exactly how a fridge ends up an eighth of an inch too wide for its cabinet.
- We will not describe a saving we cannot stand behind. A struck-through number that was invented to make the real one look generous is a lie with a font size, and we would rather compete on the price you actually pay.
- We will not claim someone else's name. We stock KitchenAid, Bosch, GE, GE Profile, Café, Maytag, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Insignia, Blackstone, Weber, Avantco, Vollrath, Miseno, Elegant Lighting and TOTO. We are not an authorised, certified or official dealer for any of them, we do not describe ourselves as one, and we do not use anybody else's name to suggest an approval we have not been given.
How we choose what to stock
Narrowly, and on purpose. Fifty-two appliances is a small catalogue by the standards of this category, and close to half of it is one category — refrigeration. Twenty-four refrigerators, ten dishwashers, fifteen ovens, ranges and grills, and three home utilities: two vanity units and a toilet.
That is not a lack of ambition. It is the thing we have learned actually matters: people replacing a built-in appliance do not want a wider choice, they want the one that fits the opening they already have, in the finish that matches the two either side of it. So we go deep on a few categories rather than wide across a showroom, and we keep listing the models that work rather than turning the range over every season.
The three home utilities — two vanity units and a toilet — are the honest exception to that. They sit slightly outside the rest of the catalogue, and we are not pretending they are the start of a bathroom department.
The unglamorous part
A compact refrigerator is around 77 lb; a large French-door model is around 395 lb. They are heavy goods, and the practical consequences are worth knowing in advance: someone has to be there, there has to be a route into the building, and a built-in unit still has to be fitted into its cutout by somebody after it lands. We are not an installation company and we do not pretend to be.
Delivery is tracked and to the UK only. It is free on every order, with no minimum spend. Orders over £150 ship with signature on delivery, which is not us being awkward — it is how you avoid an argument about whether the delivery arrived.
If something needs to come back, talk to us first. A 30-day window is generous on a small parcel and complicated on a 395 lb appliance, so email us before you send anything back, and keep the original packaging until the return is agreed.
